John Mayer: A Worship Leader?

This morning I watched John Mayer’s 2008 DVD “Where The Light Is” for the 38th time (and that’s not at all an exaggeration).

Now, I know that John Mayer isn’t exactly the best role model or by any means a Christ follower, but If you can get over John Mayer’s vulgar personality and how completely self-absorbed he is, you’ll find that John Mayer and his boys are not only incredible musicians and songwriters, but they are still crazy about their instruments. It’s an energy that is so apparent and captivating that it flows from the stage to the audience and creates a euphoric environment for everyone involved.

I’m watching this guy, who’s indulged every possible whim of the flesh, who has made fame, fortune, lust, pride, and greed his gods, sing to tens of thousands of people about his problems…about his life

“Just keep me where the light is, c’mon keep me where the light is…”

and I can’t help but notice…there in the front row, someone is truly connected to what is really going on. Everyone is singing, right? I mean it’s John Mayer…but this person is arms raised, self-abandoned, singing from the depths of their heart. They are experiencing something different than just music…something higher….something more powerful.

If we compare this moment, this person’s actions, their countenance to the most recent Hillsong or Passion DVD, we’ll see a lot of similar experiences, a lot of this connection. Which raises the question, could this person, yelling out in no particular pitch or key ,lyrics about gravity, and women, and politics with their hands raised be connected in worship to the same God we connect to at (insert large conference here)?

The bible tells us that God made everything that is good, and he is in everything that is good. He is there in our midst to share our best moments with us. (of course he is there in our worst moments too, but that’s not my point) I know you’ve felt it, whether it be at a worship service, a concert, during a sunset, or just laughing until you cry with the best of friends.

I would submit that it is a form of worship when we feel and admit that we are so small in comparison to what he is doing through us, and among us, and with with, and for us. We raise our hands in submission to say that we feel and are powerless in the light of his glory.

Our John Doe in the front row of John Mayer doesn’t know what they experienced that night in L.A., they know that they got lost in a powerful moment at a concert. But I believe that they worshipped the Almighty. They probably don’t know what he did for them, but in that moment they connected with him.

God created John Mayer’s music, and it is good, therefore…God is glorified.

God created sunsets, and they are good, therefore…God is glorified.

God created laughter, and it is good, therefore…God is glorified.

No matter how much we try and defy him…it brings me chills to say:

God is winning the hearts of his people back through the beauty of his creation.
